Best motivational speech ever?

Motivation

I think i’ve always been interested in what makes people tick. Some people are motivated by money and some by just the challenge alone. Some people go their whole lives without ever really feeling that motivated. What motivates one person may not necessarily motivate another. I reckon though for everyone, “there must be a way to make someone tick”!!

If you looked through my favourites list on youtube you would see it’s full of my hero Ranulph Fiennes on videos about motivation. Its full of survival stories against all the odds, videos about adventure and living to the full, crazy videos of people doing things only some of us have ever imagined possible. (There are then some videos on planes (standard…) and some on gymnastic accidents which always makes me laugh!) Thats what makes me tick.

Anyway, it was while watching a clip about Muhammed Ali and what got him going with training and how he become the best, that I came across this speech and it hit a nerve big time!  The speech is amazing. I’ve read it over and over again and reckon you can apply it to any hurdle in life. Maybe just change some words around but the meaning remains the same.  It was given by an American Football coach during their pre-game speech for a championship game but it wouldn’t look out of place in a new Gladiator movie. My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, father of a murder son, husband to a murdered wife and i will win this match…. <- Funny? No? Yeah, didnt think so.

This is the speech. If you can’t be bothered to read it there is a video of it by the coach of this blog entry. For anyone interested, my favourite part is this one though:

“Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well trained warrior. My heart and my soul will be the fuel to carry my body when my limbs are to weary. I will never falter, I will never lose focus as long as there is hope in my mind and my heart still beats. I will never give in to the evil that is weakness and I will fight that evil with my dying breath.”

I guess it’s the bit about never faltering while I have hope and my heart still beats… (due to having a hole in my heart i guess)… I love it and should I get a tattoo… this (along with a falcon) is what I want….

I will conquer what has never been conquered. Defeat will not be in my creed. I will believe where all those before me have doubted. I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor and respect of my team. I have trained my mind and now my body will follow!

WHO AM I? …. I AM A CHAMPION!!!

I will acknowledge the fact that I am an elite warrior who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by any means at my disposal. I accept the fact that my team expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than our opponents. Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be. One hundred percent and more.

WHO AM I? …. I AM A CHAMPION!!!

Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well trained warrior. My heart and my soul will be the fuel to carry my body when my limbs are to weary. I will never falter, I will never lose focus as long as there is hope in my mind and my heart still beats. I will never give in to the evil that is weakness and I will fight that evil with my dying breath.

WHO AM I? …. I AM A CHAMPION!!!

Energetically will I meet my enemies, no one will challenge me, none will stop me from my goal. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Champion’s word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall at the hands of my enemy and under no circumstances will I ever surrender.

WHO AM I? …. I AM A CHAMPION!!!

Readily will I display the discipline and strength required to fight on to my objective and I will complete my mission. I will rise when I fallen. I will rip the heart from my enemy and leave it beating on the ground. My enemy need not fear me but he will respect me and if he does not. I will make him respect me with all that I have to give.

WHO AM I? …. I AM A CHAMPION!!!

History will remember my name and he will not have to be kind. For I will have denied his criticisms and put in my own praise, No one will define me, no one will tell me what I can achieve, none will say I have not given all I have to give and none will take my glory.

WHO AM I? …. I AM A CHAMPION!!!

Video of the speech – turn it up loud!

I will be thinking of the above during every challenge, whichever or whatever it may be. When it gets tough and you think you cant give any more. Never ever ever ever give up… There is always someone more worse off than you in that very moment and what you do at that point when it starts to get tough and how you mentally overcome that hurdle will make the difference. For me, this year, it will make me know I have earned that sponsorship for those people who really need it.

Because who am I??? I am a normal person who believes he can do anything. A champion of my own personal goals and battles in life, whatever they may be and perhaps not, some may say. But I will try. I will try while there is hope in my mind and my heart still beats. I will never give in to the evil that is weakness, the evil that is doubt and the evil that is fear and I will fight that evil with my dying breath!! Because who am I…
